She has achieved success
Who has lived well, laughed often and loved much;
Who has gained the respect of intelligent men and women, and the love of
little children;
Who has filled her niche and accomplished her task;
Who has left the world better than she found it,
Who
has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it;
Who has looked for the best in others and given the best she had.
Whose life was an inspiration.
by A.J. Stanley
Joyce chose this poem as a loving tribute
to her mother whose memory shines in these words. This poem was read at
her funeral in 2002. |

Left: 1910 Wedding picture of Dorothy's parents, George Nelson Joyce
and Harriet Strickland, both from Newfoundland. More pics

Dorothy was one of six kids, the only girl, and the youngest!
Grandpa dearly wanted a girl so they were thrilled and very relieved when Dorothy
finally came along in 1919 during hard times in the Pacific Northwest that would
prove to be challenging times over the next 20 years.
She never disappointed her family and her brothers sure looked after their
baby sister. She had a special relationship
with each of them. She was predeceased by Bill, Don and Stan. This picture was taken
at a family reunion C1985 in Marysville, WA.
l to r: Don, Stan, Dorothy, Jim, Herb (Bill, missing from picture: died in 1953).
Mother will be
remembered for her generosity and loving nature to family and friends . . .

Four Generations - Dorothy's first great-grandchild, Shayla
Christine is born in 1996 to her first granddaughter, Joyce's daughter, Christine. l to r: Joyce,
son James (Dorothy's first grandson), little Shayla, Christine, and Dorothy.

Christmas 1996 in Victoria, BC:
Rick, Deb and their families came home that year and were welcomed by the "Great Victoria Snowfall
of 1996"
which came in a 3-day blizzard right after Christmas Day. We couldn't get our car out
of our road in Gordon Head until New Year's Eve! That was a Christmas holiday to
remember.

Left: July 1999 - we celebrate Mom's September (80th) Birthday early as
the family is home again, this time in warm weather and we have a mini-family
reunion at our house.

Right and below: April 2002 - Dorothy travels to the UK with Robert and Joyce.
Right: Taken by Lady Torphichen of Sandilands at Calder House in Scotland,
ancestral home of Joyce's paternal family near Edinburgh. Sandilands genealogists: note symbols on door behind us.

April 2002 Mother and Robert - Happy days, taken in Bishop's Stortford,
Hertsfordshire, England
2002
while doing research for Robert's next
Lizzie Book - she loved Robert's books so much
she had read them all 4 times!
This was Joyce and Dorothy's first trip to the UK and Robert drove us around
Scotland, England and Wales. One of our stops was in Staffordshire to
visit the former airforce base where Dorothy's first husband, my father, Geoff
Sandilands, was stationed. Dad was killed in the crash of a Wellington Bomber on a training flight
in October 1944. (more on my dad here)

Left: July 2002: The last family photo in the garden of our old house at Victoria before
the house was sold. The younger generations from Joyce, Rick and Debbie are
growing up! The old folks are gone and life keeps marching on.
