School Visits and Student Comments

The author, Joyce Sandilands is often joined by her husband, bestselling novelist, J. Robert Whittle, when they visit local schools. They love their visits with young people -  Miss Sandilands usually visits the K-3 classes while Mr. Whittle is a popular speaker with Middle and High School classes. Miss Sandilands also speaks to students about the joys and pitfalls of publishing and how you can publish your own book. As Mr. Whittle's schedule is exceptionally busy from Spring to Fall, his time for school visits is limited to Jan/Feb/March or Oct/Nov/Dec. Please contact the authors in Victoria, BC at 250-477-0192 to make arrangements for an author visit to your school.

Here is a selection of some past school visits on Vancouver Island. Other elementary schools they have visited include: Sundance, Sidney, Oaklands. Due to recuperating from knee surgeries the authors have not visited schools recently. Book your visit for Winter/Spring 2007/2008 NOW!

March 2005, Willows Elementary in Victoria when Mr. Whittle launched Heritage Week by talking about Victoria history and sparking many questions from the several classes who met in the library.

April 2004, Lake Cowichan High School (Middle/Jr.) on Vancouver Island and spoke to several classes about writing and publishing. Mr. Whittle read selections from his novels.

June 2003, a large group of elementary school students and parents from Langley, BC bunked at a Victoria school gym. On the last evening of their visit Mr. Whittle gave a talk about his books, Victoria history, and how he started writing. He also read selections from his novels. The next day the group visited Mr. Whittle at his market stand. Many books were purchased by the parents that weekend and the authors thank them for their interest and support.

April 2002, Miss Turner's Grade 3/4 Class at Woodhouse Primary School in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. Of particular interest was the fact that Mr. Whittle's great-nephew, Karl, was a member of that class. Upon our arrival back to Canada we received a package of letters from each of the class members. Thank you Miss Turner and Karl. We had a wonderful time.

2001, Mrs. Robinson's Grade 3 Class at John Hobb's Elementary School in Victoria (Colwood), BC. This class sent us many wonderful letters and pictures after their teacher read our book to them and some months later we visited this same class and read them some of our fairy stories. Thank you Mrs. Robinson and Class for the lovely letters and artwork. We really enjoyed spending time with you and hope you will invite us again.

We've also visited many other schools in Victoria and Sidney, BC and are now branching out to Vancouver Island schools. If you would like us to visit your school please email or write to us (address below).

Shaun's letter is one of 20 letters received from Mrs. Robinson's class. Letters were also received from: Shaun, Myriam, Chris, Brittni, Brandon H., Patrick, Caitlin, Mayan, Tyler, Calyssa, Jesse F., Brandon K., Amanda P., Branden M., Amanda O., Chelsea J., Andrew H., Paul, Alyssa, Sammie.

The authors receive many nice comments from students whose schools they visited, often seeing them later at summer markets and craft shows. "They even remember us years later and tell us how much they enjoy(ed) our books. This is great fun and we're thrilled that they remember us."
